Here we share some helpful tips on what to expect from an interviewer and how to set yourself up for success before, during and after the interview.

Location

Job interviews are often conducted at the location of the workplace, however, sometimes will take place in a more casual setting such as a café. The interviewer has a desire to get to know you as a person and to grasp if you are the right fit for the workplace culture, which is sometimes easier in a more casual environment.

It is important to remember that a job interview must contain a level of professionalism regardless of the location.

Preparing for questions!

Interviewers will ask questions regarding your skills and experience.

The first step to preparing for a job interview is identifying the skills needed for the job and then determining if you have those skills. If a skill is needed in your field, but you don't have experience using it yet - that’s ok! Just be prepared to explain how you plan on learning this skill and practicing it.

Never misrepresent or embellish your experience and qualifications. Practice responding to questions and selling your best skills in context with the question being asked.

Identify your weaknesses in your experience and be honest with your potential employee so that they know you are willing to address them. When asked about your weaknesses, try answering with something like “I am always looking for new ways to improve my…”

It is also important to ask questions about the business that you would have researched prior to the interview. This shows keen interest in the business and can make a lasting impression. For example:

  • What are their goals?
  • What would they like to achieve?
  • Are there and recent challenges the company has faced and how can you help? E.g. a new competitor

Speak with clarity

Sometimes nerves can get the better of us and its easy to start speaking too quickly and to go off on a tangent. To help with nerves, remember the interviewer may be feeling equally as nervous as you. Be conscious of your nerves and take time in your answers. Answers should be concise, and the conversation kept on topic.

Follow this simple advice and you'll be able to handle any interview that comes your way!
